Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, the left-handed batting sensation whose performances in the U19 World Cup last year were vital to India’s success, has been included in squads for tours of Ireland and England (between July and September) – which also features (U20) Asian Games. One of the most expected announcements was that of the teenager and chief selector Ajit Agarkar said it was an easy call.
While announcing the squad Agarkar hailed Sooryavanshi’s meteoric rise and said that it was difficult for selectors to leave the young quick out on the basis of his performances. The chief selector stated that the batter has been one of the most exciting cricketers in India, thanks to his consistency and talent under pressure.
In his second Indian Premier League season, Sooryavanshi has had a breakout campaign. He ended the tournament as the highest run-scorer, winning the illustrious Orange Cap with 776 runs. More so anyways, with his phenomenal strike rate of 230+, showcasing how damaging an attacking batsman he is and capable of winning matches on the go.
He made a significant impression in his franchise Rajasthan Royals and the selectors took notice of this. Sooryavanshi had played a number of match-winning innings throughout the season and was one India’s highest run-getters, playing a key part in taking the team into the playoffs. His aggressive batting approach could frequently turn the tide of matches and keep Rajasthan in contention at higher-stakes moments.
Agarkar pointed out that while other youngsters seem promising, at least Sooryavanshi has already proven he can impact the highest domestic success so far. Over the last two seasons, he has been playing at a level far beyond his age and selectors believe he is now ready for international exposure.
This call-up is a huge moment in the young man’s developing career. While expectations will no doubt be high, his selection speaks volumes to the faith that India’s cricketing hierarchy has placed on him and his latent ability. Now he is preparing to experience the national side for the first time as fans up and down the country will hope that he can take his form shown in domestic cricket onto the international pitches and establish himself as one of India’s new era stars.
