Sri Lanka Enter T20 World Cup with Momentum and Fresh Ambitions

Sri Lanka arrive at the Women’s T20 World Cup on a real high, having achieved five straight ODI wins ahead of the tournament. Though those victories were largely on the slower pitches of Bangladesh and the Caribbean, it has added to building confidence in a young squad which is looking to establish itself on the world stage.

Sri Lanka have been one of the most unpredictable teams in the competition despite their recent success. Due to only however many matches in New Zealand during the latest universal cycle, the side have battled for presentation with conditions as of now being played somewhere else among SENA nations (South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia). Consequently, their campaign may depend on them adapting quickly enough to unfamiliar surfaces and conditions.

Experienced and dynamic, Chamari Athapaththu will lead, with her all-round play a key component of Sri Lanka’s aspirations. Assisted with the talented squad of players like Vishmi Gunarathne, Harshitha Samarawickrama, Kavisha Dilhari and Kaushani Nuthyangana. The team is a combination of youthful dynamism and budding talent, giving a glimpse into the future of Sri Lankan women’s cricket.

Another talking point is the commission of seasoned spinner Inoka Ranaweera. The move represents a step in the direction of a younger core as the team tries to compete for now and the future. The onus will again be on those like Sugandika Kumari, Mithali Ayodhya and Malki Madara to deliver consistent performances with the ball in hand and pick wickets when it matters most.

For the last match Sri Lanka possible playing XI would see Chamari Athapaththu Open with Hasini Perera while Imesha Dulani and Harshitha Samarawickrama stronger than others in the Middle Order. In are Hansima Karunaratne, Nilakshika Silva and Kavisha Dilhari while handling wicketkeeping duties, will be expected from Kaushani Nuthyangana. The bowling unit should consist of Sugandika Kumari, Mithali Ayodhya and Malki Madara.

Commenting on the Women’s T20 World Cup, Sri Lanka have never progressed beyond the group stage of the tournament. But, with confidence at a high and new heroes stepping to the fore, they will be looking to better their previous highest placing in the tournament.
