Origins of the Rivalry (1877–1900)

The historic rivalry between England and Australia started because of the very first Test match ever played in 1877 at Melbourne. That match, played at Edgbaston, Birmingham is famous in Australia as the “Test the World Forgot”, with Australia eventually winning, heralding a great rivalry between both sides.

The 1882 Oval Test was Australia defeating England in one of the ‘great’ Tests, and one that should’ve crowned the greatest test cricket rivalry as it would come to be known. Out of that came the satirical obituary declaring “English cricket is dead,” printed in a British newspaper – from which rose The Ashes.

That brought the stage for a more competitive and aggressive cricket from both the sides. With the adoption of an aggressive style (Bazball) and scores that pretentiously ran fast with little resentment, England was full strength typical under Ben Stokes. Australia, on the other hand, continued their juggernaut at home by winning pretty much every Ashes series with Steve Smith and Pat Cummins consistently leading from the front. The 2023 Ashes series finished in a draw, and thus Australia retained the trophy, while their execution of home-ground advantage was similarly evident in the subsequent 2025–26 series, which Australia won decisively by four Tests to one.
